Can ANYONE learn to sing?

inspiration Feb 16, 2023

A common belief among some people is that singing is a talent that you are born with, and if you are not "born with it”, then you cannot learn it. But is it actually true that you cannot learn to sing without that talent? Let's figure it out!

We learn many skills in our life that we think are scary in the beginning, but we learn to do so eventually. Here are some examples of that: learning to swim, drive, and even cook. These are all skills you can learn to master if you have the willingness and commitment to do so.

Similar to singing, if you are passionate and motivated to learn to sing, you can do so as long as you are not tone-deaf. Only 4% of the population is tone-deaf. If you can hear the difference between one pitch from another, then you don’t need to worry because you are not tone-deaf! Therefore, you can learn to sing.

What are the steps that you can take toward the goal of learning to sing?

Have good breath support. You can practice this by putting your hand on your stomach, breathing in, and then breathing out freely with that long S sound until you feel your abdominal muscles tighten. Once you have no air left, release your abdominal muscles and breathe in again and repeat. You can practice this once a day.

Warm up your voice. Warming up in a healthy way is very important before you dig into your repertoire. To help with warming up your voice, click here to download my free vocal warm-up that I do every morning.

Have fun warming up your voice and have fun singing!

Thank you for being with me again, and I hope to see you again next week!
